However he has a very interesting history having been born in India where he spent his childhood to joining the Marines in 1959 where he a held a position as a member of the Special Boat Service.
After this he spent time learning Mandarin at Hong Kong University following which he became a British Diplomat for 5 years.
- He became an MP in 1983 before progressing to Leader of the Liberal and Social Democrats Party in 1988.
- He received a knighthood in 2000 and entered the House of Lords at Westminster.
During the Bosnia and Herzegovina conflict from May 2002 until January 2006 he acted as a High Representative with special responsibility for decisive action in the conflict.
Following his successful and distinguished career in politics he has written several books which include his autobiography – A Fortunate Life.
